  1. Biography

    Katherine Feeney

Journalist, commentator, student anthropologist, occasional dramaturge and eternal optimist.

(This page used to be in the third-person. I now kind of think that’s silly).

    Hello, I’m Kat.

I have worked with brisbanetimes.com.au since we launched in 2007. I am passionate about digital media.

Currently, I sit behind the newly created Urban Affairs desk. There I write about the guts of life Brisbane - the buildings, big wigs, buses and glory of City Hall. Before, I was the site’s entertainment and lifestyle editor where I managed a stable of dedicated bloggers and wrote about arts and culture. Initially, way back in 2007, I joined the team as a site producer and general news reporter - a staff gig I was lucky to land midway through my Journalism and Economics degrees (UQ).

But perhaps you know me as CityKat?

“Officially” I am one of Australia’s leading commentators on sex, love dating and relationships because, twice a week, I file a blog under that moniker dealing with aforementioned subject matter. It was syndicated across the Fairfax Network in 2010. I’m pretty proud of that. I owe a lot to the regular and vocal readers who’ve contributed thousands of comments over the years. The same people who would tell you I’m “officially” anything will show you reader statistics which aren’t half bad. They tell me I average about 40,000 readers per week.

Anyway. It’s a lot of fun. Sometimes it even lands me on the tele.

I’m currently trying to finish off a degree in Anthropology (minor in Religions). I also like to create theatre in my spare time. Spark: The Conversation didn’t do too badly - we played at the Brisbane Anywhere Theatre Festival, Melbourne Fringe, and as part of Queensland Youth Week. High fives.

I currently live in Brisbane. I trained as a chef before becoming a journalist.

Sometimes I review restaurants. Most recently for the inaugural Queensland Good Food Guide.

I’m also a sucker for public speaking. If you’d like to hear me say profound and meaningful things about the media, new journalism, culture, urban issues or, y’know, sex, at your next event, you can reach me through the contact page.

    I’m also on the Twitters - @katherinefeeney
